SANDRA BLAND’S STORY:

Sandra Bland was a 28-year-old woman who was starting a new life and career at A&M when one day she was pulled over by the Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Brain Encinia July 12th, 2015.She was pulled over for failing to signal a lane change. The video shows that though Bland was corporative with the officers he thought otherwise and charged her with assaulting a law enforcement and taken to jail. Three days later Bland was found dead in her jail cell. She died from hanging herself in her jail cell with garbage bags. “Bland’s death highlighted the fact that unjustified police violence, followed by character assassination via media release, is not only experienced by black men and boys.” –Soraya McDonald https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wsRe454u8s

Recently new video has emerged that calls into question the arresting officer's reporting of events associated with Bland's case. This calls for a new look into the circumstances involving her tragic death.

HOW SANDRA BLAND’S STORY SPEAKS TO WOMEN:

• Sandra Bland’s story speaks to women by reminding them that unjust police violence is not just towards just black men and boys but also very much towards women as well.

• Also, that there is less emphasis on the unjust treatment of black women

• We need to speak up for black women’s rights and let the unjust police violence that has hurt and killed black women be known to our society.

THEORIES THAT PUT HER STORY IN GREATER PERSPECTIVE:

Her rights were talking away and made her voiceless because of the color of her skin and because of her gender. This is something that we see a lot of and something that needs to change.

ACTIONS WE CAN TAKE THAT WILL ADRESS SANDRA BLAND’S EXPERIENCE:

Stand up against these unjust police officers and make them pay for their actions as a society. Make these women’s stories more heard. Advocate for black women and those who have wronged them.
